Notes: ELCAN (acronym for E. Leitz Canada) was established in 1952 by Gunther Leitz with facilities in Midland, Ontario as a branch of E. Leitz Germany. In addition to binoculars other optical equipment was produced including cameras, lenses and rifle scopes from the 1950’s through the 1980’s. The business was purchased by Hughes Aircraft Company in 1990 and in 1994 became a unit of Raytheon Commercial Electronics.
According to a www.europa.com/~telscope/binotele.htm article approximately 7,500 of the black bodied military model and 400 of the gray bodied civilian model were produced between 1974 and 1977. Leitz Canada correspondence and data sheets show that additional ELCAN binoculars may have been made during a 1983 production run and possibly one in 1987 but do not indicate if these were civilian or military models and how many were made. The sheets state that the binoculars to be produced in 1987 would have had a 7.65 deg. FOV while those made earlier (inclusive of Civilian Model) were either 7.25 deg. or 7.4 deg.. Clive Law in "Without Warning - Canadian Sniper Equipment in the 20th Century" (page 86) states, "By the late 1980's the No. 2 binocular (i.e. REL 6X30) was showing its age and the Canadian Forces bought a supply of Elcan binoculars as replacements." Both models have a Schmidt Pechan roof prism system (See: www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/5207090693/in/set-72157623... ).
The build quality of binocular is very high. It has a two element air-spaced objective lens to shorten focal length to reduce the size of the binocular. The ocular assemblies are O ring sealed for weather and dust proofing, and it has ports for nitrogen filling to protect against hazing of prisms and internal condensation.
Except for color and a graticule in the military’s right ocular the military 7X50 and civilian 7X50B ELCANs appear identical. It has been reported that their eyecups are not interchangeable, but on my examples they are. As noted above, there may be some variations in FOV between versions, but these two examples seem to have the same FOV. It has also been reported that optically the military version is better which I find to be the case with mine. Although the collection’s military model is in mint condition while the civilian model shows signs of external wear, the civilian one has been recently professionally serviced and is in optically very good condition. Nonetheless, the military one’s view is noticeably brighter with far more neutral color rendition (the civilian’s colors show a stronger yellow/amber bias) and seems slightly sharper to the edge although neither has outstanding edge sharpness. For a description of the Leitz Canada (ELCAN) 7X50B civilian model see: www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/4855350335/in/set-72157623... .
I would very much like to hear from any other collectors who have either this binocular or the civilian model.
