We believe Leica and Zeiss to be neck-and-neck with Swarovski a step below. Leica (Leitz) has been much more innovative and aggressive over the last few years, and they probably deserve the nod. The basic German-made models from Zeiss are still outstanding, but we are less impressed with those made in Hungary and elsewhere. To be sure, Swarovski makes a good product, but their success has primarily been a result of good marketing.
Designing and building a binocular involves a complex series of optical and physical compromises. That is why most manufacturers offer several different product lines, each line designed to maximize certain performance criteria, often at the expense of other operational specifications deemed less critical. The best binoculars are those that offer generally superior performance across the widest set of parameters--yet some compromises invariably remain. Certainly, Leica and Zeiss perform this balancing act as well as anyone, but no more so than Swarovski or some of the top Japanese offerings.
